Ancestor Magic: Not That Prayer!

June 20, 2019by Lonnie Scott0

You’ve likely heard many of the guests on my show talking about Ancestors. It’s an important part of many traditions both magical and religious. Ancestors also happen to be a subject many stall on before they really start. Confusion sometimes slows the relationship down on your side. Perhaps you start with the only kind of prayer you think goes in magic.

Here’s a few tips on how to talk to Ancestors so you can keep that line of communication open, and the relationship flowing right.

Thee and Thou

Stop. No and don’t. These are your Ancestors. They’re people. Well, they were, and now they occupy a place in your spirit allies. Talk to them the way you would speak to your Grandparents. Use respect. Be honest. Most of all, be yourself and say what you really mean.

Your Altar is Fine

Here is a common hurdle. Where does the altar go? How big? What color cloth? What about candles?

Calm down.

Start simple. Get some pictures of your recent Ancestors. Choose a place in your home that you can access with ease. This isn’t a contest. It’s a place to speak to your Ancestors and make offerings.

About Those Offerings

Water.

It really is that simple.

Start with clean water.

I place mine in my altar in a small jar style cup. It makes me think of the mason style jars my Great Grandparents used for drinking glasses.

Complexity can stop you from forming a consistent practice. Keep it simple.

That’s a Wrap!

This is enough to get started.

Do you want to go deeper? Way deeper?

The Magic & Mystery Course Ancestor Veneration is coming on August 1st!

The date was moved forward a month because I wanted to take time to give you more insight into why this practice matters.
